Tigers Tamed Again at North Lodge Park – writes Colin Keenan

Formartine United FC 5, Huntly FC 1

This was the second encounter between the two Teams in under a fortnight and the nature and margin of victory was the same each time. In both matches, the margin of superiority United held over the visitors was vast.

United were at their throats from the start of the Match and it was no surprise when the opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Lisle, whose pace was a problem to visiting defenders all match, played the ball to Greig who in turn set-up RODGER who from about fifteen yards out, drove it hard past Storrier.

United were in confident and aggressive mood and mounted wave upon wave of attack on the Huntly goal. With the exception of the odd foray in the United half by Imbert–Thomas, Huntly offered very little threat for a solid looking home defence.

After a period of sustained attack by United during which Smith, Greig, Rodger, Lisle and Mykyta all went close, Huntly seemed to have gained a brief respite. This ended in the 13th minute when CRAWFORD intercepted a forward pass from the ex-United defender Clark and took a step or two forward before smashing the ball on the half volley into the net via the underside of the crossbar from fully thirty yards out.

The onslaught continued and Jonathan SMITH opened his account with a classic striker’s goal when in the aftermath of a corner kick on the right he found himself with as much time and space at the back post to slot the ball home from close range.

The game was really done and dusted by then and the only issue to be settled in the second half was the eventual extent of United’s victory. Two simple, well-taken goals left United five to the good.

In the 58th minute GREIG, jinked in from the left flank and cracked a very accurate fifteen yarder beyond the reach of Storrier. SMITH then completed his double and the scoring with his tenth goal of the Season in the 71st minute with a drive from the edge of the box.

Huntly battled on and Imbert-Thomas came within a hairsbreadth of a goal to match the quality of Crawford’s earlier strike when he unleashed a drive from twenty-five yards that Demus pushed onto the far post. Huntly claimed in vain that the ball had crossed the goal line as it rebounded from the post but the Assistant’s flag remained down and play continued.

Three minutes later there was justice of a sort as IMBERT-THOMAS, just beat Macbeath to get the last touch that turned a Buchan cross into the net from a couple of yards out.
